Whiplash, also called cervical acceleration-deceleration, is a brain injury caused by a sudden jolt forward or backward. Most commonly, whiplash is the result of a car accident. If you are rear ended, for example, your body is jolted forward straightening out your spinal cord and forcing your head to extend safe levels. When this happens the head and neck extend normal limits causing tears in ligaments and discs in and around the head and neck area and your brain to whip backwards as it has not caught up to the rest of your body. The body then slams backwards and you have the same effects, reversed.
Whiplash can occur in any type of accident, motor vehicle, work accident, or a trip, slip, or fall accident. Whiplash can cause bleeding in the brain, tearing of ligaments and discs, and a host of neurologic disorders.
These injuries are extremely painful and can be very difficult to live with. In severe cases your quality of life can be negatively impacted, cause you to be out of work, and can even result in permanent brain damage. The cost and time required to treat this injury can be excessive.
