Surgical errors unfortunately happen more than anyone would like to think. Wrong site surgeries, wrong procedures performed on patients, incorrect incisions, not properly sterilized equipment, damage to nearby organs, prolonged surgery, and even surgical tools being left in the patient’s body are all examples of surgical errors that could, and do, occur.
The reasons for surgical errors can’t be pinpointed, as there are a number of reasons for why they occur. The most common is a lack of communication between the doctor, the surgical team, and you, the patient. In an effort to avoid surgical errors you should never be embarrassed or ashamed to verify what procedure you’re having done and where exactly on the body that procedure will be performed. You should notify your doctor about any and all family history health problems, related or not, any medications you are on, and any allergies you have. Your doctor should then take all that information and evaluate your current health to ensure that you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Not being a doctor it’s hard to know and remember what information you should share with your doctor prior to surgery, that is why the doctor or the surgical team should ask you these questions and many more before ever stepping foot in an operating room.
The majority of instances of wrong site surgeries involve a breakdown in communication among the surgical team and the patient and family. You and your surgeon should agree on exactly what will be done during surgery. You should insist on having the surgical site marked with a permanent marker and be involved in marking the site. If you cannot be awake when the marking occurs, have a family member assist.
Surgical errors can also occur post-operation. If the incision was not properly closed, infection to the interior and exterior of the site could happen. Poor post-op care could also cause infection, septic shock, or delayed healing.
