While there are many things expectant mothers fear about delivering their baby Shoulder Dystocia could be one of the most common fears. Shoulder Dystocia occurs when one of the baby’s shoulders, sometimes both, get stuck on the mother’s pubic bone, stopping the natural progression of delivery. The most terrifying thing about shoulder dystocia is that, even though there are many warning signs, there isn’t an exact way to predict whether or not the child is at risk for shoulder dystocia.
Another terrifying fact of shoulder dystocia is that even if you or your doctor are concerned that you and your baby are danger, there is no one way to stop it from happening. There are certain positions, methods, and options that all medical professionals involved in delivering your baby should know and perform to prevent injury to you and your baby. Since all births are different many of the maneuvers may be tried in a quick progression to resolve the situation as quickly and as safely as possible.
When medical professionals fail to detect shoulder dystocia early on and subsequently fail to perform the necessary maneuvers and procedures following detection the end result could be devastating for you or your child. Even if the medical professionals perform all necessary procedures it is possible for too much pressure or force to be used during the maneuvers which also cause severe injury. If injury occurs as a result of shoulder dystocia the following could occur to you or your baby:
- Your baby was slow to start breathing or needed assistance breathing immediately after birth
- Your baby has/had a fractured collar bone
- Your baby is suffering with a brachial plexus (Erb’s Palsy) injury
- You suffered from maternal hemorrhaging
- You suffered from uterine rupture
We know and understand that money and financial rewards could never give your baby a clean bill of health again, but someone needs to be held accountable for the tragedy they have imposed on you and your family.
