Anesthesia is a very useful tool used in aiding surgical procedures but sometimes it can do more harm than good. When not properly administered, anesthesia can cause severe injuries and could even result in death.

There are different types of anesthesia. Some produce a fully unconscious state and some just semiconscious states for the patient depending on the severity and location of their procedure.
  1. General anesthesia can be administered into a vein or through the patient inhaling it. This type of anesthesia affects the brain and the entire body. Patients given general anesthesia are completely unconscious throughout the procedure and do not feel anything during the procedure.

  2. Regional anesthesia only provides pain relief, as opposed to a complete lack of feeling. Regional anesthesia only affects the injected area of the body. The patient can be awake during regional anesthesia procedures but is normally given medication to relax or sleep during the procedure. Epidurals and peripheral nerve blocks are common types of regional anesthesia.

  3. Local anesthesia is an injection directly into the surgical area. It acts as a numbing agent to block out any pain sensations. Local anesthesia is used for minor procedures on small areas of the body.

The type of anesthesia administered for your surgical procedure is dependent on a few different considerations. Severity of the procedure, body position for the procedure, length of the procedure, allergies, age of the patient, level of pain prior to the procedure, any disorders the patient may have, the type of muscle relaxers administered along with the anesthesia, as well as your overall health are all considered prior to administration of anesthesia. The anesthesiologist will prefer one type over the other depending on all of the above. If the risks and benefits for all anesthesia options are the same there are times the anesthesiologist will let you choose the type you prefer.

Not obtaining the proper information from you prior to administering anesthesia is one cause of error that could have severe effects. Even if all this information is obtained error could still occur during the surgical procedure itself such as:
  • Incorrect dosage of anesthesia
  • Failing to constantly monitor the patient
  • Not recognizing complications
  • Delayed delivery
  • Harmful drug interactions with the anesthesia
Anesthesia errors and complications can have devastating effects. Coma, suffocation, nerve damage, heart attack, brain damage, birth defects, loss of bodily functions, and death are all possible consequences of negligent anesthesia administration.
